Clothing constitutes an important cultural language that reflects both the personal narratives of individuals and the ever-changing tides of the times. Weaving fabric and crafting garments is also an act that entails the careful layering of time. Each piece of clothing carries the memory of the seasons it has endured, the rituals that marked life’s milestones, and the shifting values of society. In spring, people’s attire reflected the vibrant colors of nature, whereas in summer, garments made of cool fabrics like ramie were favored. In autumn and winter, garments were made of materials like padded cotton and fur for warmth, using diverse garment-making techniques such as layering and quilting. Moreover, throughout the major rites of passage such as births, coming of age, weddings, and funerals, clothing reflected people's social status and the significance of their life events, while also embodying the shifting social values and aesthetic sensibilities of each era. This exhibition vividly presents the evolution of Korean clothing, from excavated artifacts of early Joseon-period garments to modern hanbok, illustrating its saga of transformation through time. In addition, the exhibition offers a space where visitors can explore depictions of generations who wore hanbok in daily life through films and materials from the 1950s to the 1970s. A digital program also offers the opportunity to experience traditional clothing of the Joseon Dynasty, exploring the many facets of attire that have evolved alongside our lives.
