Plants such as flowers, trees, and grass, which have held various meanings in human lives for a long time, have provided benefits in terms of their ecological characteristics and beauty. In such process, plants have come to be metaphors and symbols that project diverse literary, philosophical, and aesthetic perspectives of thought. Scholars of the Joseon Dynasty used to project human values and emotions on ecological characteristics of plants. By observing plants, they discovered the morality of virtuous men, the loyalty between friends, and the virtue of living in seclusion, and took them as symbols of scholarly spirit. The process of drawing and completing plant paintings was also regarded as a time of training, and they recalled teachers they admired or friends who gave them comfort in their lives through living plants as well as plants reproduced in artworks. Gallery 1 presents various aspects of plants reflected in the scholar culture of the Joseon period.
