Description
The Funeral Procession of Empress Myeongseong depicts the funeral procession held in 1897, two years after the assassination of Empress Myeongseong (1851-1895). This illustration of funeral procession was created in advance of the state funeral of Empress Myeongseong in order to prevent potential procedural mistakes in the actual event. After the state funeral were completed, the illustration was utilized as a blueprint of funeral procession paintings in the royal protocol of the Joseon Dynasty. This illustration epitomizes the state of the royal household in 19th century Joseon, after declaring the birth of Korean Empire and taking its first steps toward modernity, keeping abreast with changes of the times while maintaining tradition.
