Description
This Maebyeong, inlaid with four scenes depicting two people in garden setting, was clearly meant to be appreciated for its pictorial quality. Derived from the time-honored painting theme of the Four Pleasures, the figures are shown playing musical instruments and viewing a painting under chrysanthemums, lotuses, and bamboo. The subject is unusual in the tradition of ceramic decoration, and other examples have not been found to date. It is a significant piece that provides information about the religious culture and everyday life of the time and further provides insight into the trends of Goryeo painting.
