Kim Gi-chang (1913~2001) learned painting at Nakcheongheon, a painting school run by Kim Eun-ho that focused on portraits painted in the neoclassical style, with which he won awards at the Joseon Art Exhibitions several times. After the liberation, he garnered great interest in Korean genre paintings and started to employ lively brushstrokes while deliberately eliminating thick layers of color.
