A key holder is also called “別錢牌 (coin holder)” or “開金牌 (key holder)”. Having been used to hold keys together, key holders became a common wedding-chest item for noble women. The bride’s mother would make a key holder for her daughter’s marriage, and it was hung in the home of the newlywed couple as a decoration to bring good fortune to them.
Below the rectangular plate, coins symbolizing good fortune and repelling evil spirits are tied in a row, and at the end of these coins were colorful silk decorations on which words of blessing are written, such as 壽福康寧 (longevity with good health and well-being), 子孫昌盛 (prosperous family with many children), 百子千孫 (great fertility), and 壽富多男 (longevity, good fortune and many sons).
