This brush holder is made by combining five different bamboo tubes of identical height, with the largest one in the center. The characters “守口如甁” meaning “watch your language” are inscribed along the top band with fret patterns around the brim. These patterns including chrysanthemums, plum blossoms and cranes are decorated using the bakji technique in which the background is carved out revealing a pattern in relief.
