Details
This is a picture of Pyoam Kang Se-hwang (1713~1791), who is known for his keen insight and connoisseurship as a leading scholar-painter as well as a critic in the late Joseon Dynasty. At the bottom of the screen, there is an inscription, “Shadow of apricot flower under the bright moonlight” which depicts the beautiful scenery in writing. The inscription is one of quatrain with seven Chinese characters listed in the book Seokcheon Poetry by Im Eok-ryeong, a writer of the mid-Joseon period who was famous for his novel and outstanding poems. Other than Im Eok-ryeong, various writers from the late Goryeo to the Joseon period borrowed the phrase "Shadow of apricot flower" from the Chinese Southern Song Dynasty poet Chen Yuyi’s "Lin jiang xian" in order to use it in a poem that describes the graceful atmosphere of the night.
