The main character in this painting is Linbu of the Northern Song dynasty, who lived a noble life callig plum blossoms his wife and cranes his sons. Linbu studied diligently on his own and then he retired to a hermitage on Lonely Mountain in Xihu, Hangzhou, to write poems. His pure way of life was highly praised by scholars at the time. This painting depicts Linbu releasing a crane, showing the mercy of the scholar, who loved the crane and was willing to give up his ownership.
