This gold box is said to have been excavated in Byeokje, Gyeonggi-do, from the tomb of a princess of the Joseon Dynasty, along with a mandarin duck-shaped ornament, two hairpins and glass beads. The round box made of pure gold represents a fully bloomed lotus flower, and its ovary and eight petals are studded with gems. The front and back sides are identical. This elaborate gold box reflects the royal family culture of the early Joseon Dynasty.
The two hairpins from the same tomb are called “佛頭簪 (Buddha’s hairpin)”, since their head resembles the head of the Buddha. One of the pins is made of gold and the other of jade, with twisted gold thread decorating the head. The mandarin duck-shaped gold ornament is hollow, and its wings and feathers are elaborately expressed.
