Paintings and Calligraphy

Ewha Womans University Museum houses a collection of artworks following traditional East Asian motifs including landscapes, flowers and birds, the Four Gentlemen Plants(plum blossom, orchids, chrysanthemums, and bamboo), portraits, and documentary paintings by more than 100 artists from the Joseon dynasty. Particularly, The Painting of a Gathering of Retired Senior Officials(Treasure No. 638), the Ten-paneled Folding Screen with the Painting of Ten Longevity Symbols and Orchid painted by the Daewongun(Prince of the Great Court) Yi Ha-eung(1820-1898), are masterpieces illustrating diverse aspects of court painting from the Joseon era. Paintings including the portrait of the civil official, Jo Mun-myeong (1680-1732) and the documentary painting, Royal Procession Ceremony of the Joseon Dynasty are precious references for studies on the history of Korean paintings, costumes, and social systems. The museum also holds a collection of calligraphic works including those by Kim Jeong-hui, a scholar and celebrated practitioner of calligraphy, and rubbed copies of epigraphic works on metal or stone.

Modern and Contemporary Art

Ewha Womans University Museum houses many works of modern and contemporary art, which reflect the artistic sensibility of the times, as well as many traditional relics. Starting from the 1950s, the museum has purchased works of modern and contemporary art, and private collectors have also donated works. Acquisitions and donations have become more active since the 2000s. The works of modern and contemporary art encompass a wide range of genres and eras—ranging from works by Park Seo-bo and Kim Bo-hie, who used distinctive composition and quality of materials to achieve abstraction, to print works by Oh Yun, who depicted the poor and underprivileged—showing the main current of contemporary art history. In accordance with the educational philosophy of Ewha Womans University which nurtures female leadership, the museum also houses works of art by feminist artists who have built on the tradition of feminist art in Korea including Yun Suk-nam, Lee Bul.

Ceramics

Ewha Womans University Museum houses a variety of pottery from various time periods, ranging from prehistoric earthenware to modern works of ceramic art. Its collection includes precious relics that boast historical value and beauty as well as national treasure-level artifacts. In addition, shards of pottery from years of field research on ancient remains are seen as important in showing the history of pottery's development in Korea and its artistic achievements.

Metal Crafts

Ewha Womans University Museum houses a vast collection of metal relics including ornaments, ceremonial weapons, ritual vessels, and everyday items from the Bronze Age to the Joseon dynasty. The major artifacts from prehistoric times include bronze daggers excavated from the dolmens in the village of Sangjapo-ri, Yangpeyong-gun and bronze wares from Nakdong-ri in Sangju city. The burial artifacts and ritual vessels served as instruments of power. Gilt-bronze shoes and gold ornaments excavated from the tumuli nearby Gongju city are masterpieces of wealth and power in addition to their exquisite beauty. Ancient Koreans produced everyday items in metal, which is more solid, reusable, and shiny compared to wood or pottery. Shapes, motifs, and techniques borrowed from other types of crafts were applied to metal crafts and vice versa.
