Description
This painting depicts a scene from Chinese mythology in which peach trees bear their divine fruits in Yoji Pond (瑤池) where the Ancient Chinese Goddess Queen Mother of the West (Xiwangmu, 西王母) lived. This painting was made to decorate the interior of the royal palace or to celebrate special occasions at the court. Unlike the painting of the ten longevity symbols, this painting does not contain any deer or tortoise, instead emphasizing cranes and divine peaches to embody the world of the immortals. Through this painting, the royal household prayed for their longevity and prosperity, and visually expressed the sovereign power and dignity of the monarchy.
