Description
Lee Bul has criticized the representation of women in popular culture through her performances and diverse art works since the late 1980s. Her Cyborg series, presented in the late 1990s, caught the eye of the art world with its fusion of machine and organism. The cyborgs are sensual, as if they are a combination of Japanese animation characters and Western classical statues, but imperfect, with missing body parts. Lee uses the mutilated bodies of the cyborgs to question twisted male perceptions of women and the myth of the perfection of future technology.
