Lee Ungno reinterpreted traditional literati paintings and calligraphy from a contemporary viewpoint, using his unique abstract calligraphic style to combine the meaning and abstractness of traditional calligraphy in a modern way. In Composition, which exemplifies the 1970s calligraphic abstraction works, modified letters in dark ink reminiscent of Chinese characters richly entangle and overlap on the canvas.
